Do you need a boat licence for a 6 hp motor in NSW?

As a 6 hp motor generally cannot travel at 10 knots the answer would be no. In NSW, you need a licence to operate a recreational vessel if the vessel can travel at 10 knots (18.5 km/h) or more, or if you are operating a personal watercraft (PWC). However, no licence is required for driving a powerboat or sailing boat under 10 knots, operating a sailing boat without an engine, or using non-motorized vessels like canoes, kayaks, surf skis, or rowboats.

General boat driving licences are renewable for 1, 3, 5 or 10 years and can be renewed online. You're also able to update your contact details, if you need to. You'll receive a renewal notice about 6 weeks before your licence expires. Check out the service NSW website to renew your licence.
